Caffe Farnese. The newly-restored Palazzo Farnese is an added companion as you sample the sights and sounds of this colorful piazza with its ancient bathtub fountains. Via Baullari, 106.

Ciampini. This elegant bar, located in the centro storico, is a wonderful place to stop before or during a shopping excursion. A cornetto and cappuccino for breakfast or a light sandwich and spremuta (fresh squeezed juice) are available with an atmosphere to match. Piazza S. Lorenzo in Lucina, 29.

La Taverna al Campo. Try a caffe' sweetened with whipped cream of sugar, or a creative sandwich at this hip bar. Then sample the peanuts and other salatini. Campo de' Fiori.

Maurizio's. Although you will not see any name on the bar, the intimate nature of Rome comes alive in this charming place with delicious sandwiches and hot dishes. Around the corner from the local outdoor market in Testaccio. Via Marmorata, 59.

Caffe Greco. Have a caffe' or cappuccino standing at the bar of this historic establishment that dates from 1760. Then wander through the other rooms, where the ghosts of historical greats will greet you. Via Condotti, 86, near Piazza di Spagna.

Silvano in Via del Governo Vecchio. Funky, eccentric, economical, quick -- and delicious. The pizza bianca is served with your choice of goodies inside. A favorite of the locals. At the corner of Via Corallo.
